Tom Traves

President and Vice Chancellor

Dr. Tom Traves has been president and vice-chancellor of Dalhousie University since 1995. He was previously vice president (academic) at the University of New Brunswick and dean of arts at York University.

Dr. Traves is vice chair and chair elect of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) board of directors, and a member of the AUCC’s Standing Advisory Committee on University Research. He is a member and past-chair of the Association of Atlantic Universities, the American Association of Higher Education, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. He is a member of the board of directors of the Greater Halifax Partnership, and chair and trustee of Clearwater Seafoods Income Fund.

He is a former member of the Maritime Life Assurance Company and AT&T Canada, the Treasury Board of Canada Advisory Committee on Senior Level Retention and Compensation, the Halifax Regional Municipality Economic Strategy Advisory Committee, the Canadian Historical Society, and past Honorary Colonel of 12 Wing Shearwater.

Dr. Traves has a BA from the University of Manitoba, an MA and PhD from York University, and an honorary doctorate from Umea University in Sweden.
