EastMed Inc., the Atlantic Canadian company that designed and manufactures uresta™ Continence Care, which was launched less than a year ago in Atlantic Canada, has been awarded a 2008 Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA).

The MDEA program recognizes the achievements of medical device manufacturers responsible for creating innovative products that change the face of healthcare.

"We are delighted and honoured to be recognized with an award like this so soon after introducing the product to market," said Dr. Scott Farrell, vice president of EastMed and head of the urogynaecology department at the IWK Health Centre.

"It provides our entire team with validation that we have developed an exceptional product for women who suffer from Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI)."

The MDEA competition is organized and presented by Canon Communications LLC (Los Angeles) and is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes contributions and advances in the design of medical products. Entries are evaluated on the basis of their design and engineering features, including:

• innovative use of materials
• user-related functions that improve healthcare delivery and change traditional medical attitudes or practices
• features that provide enhanced benefits to the patient
• the ability of the product development team to overcome design and engineering challenges to meet clinical objectives

EastMed will be presented with its award at this year’s MDEA presentation ceremony to be held June 4 in New York City at the Medical Design and Manufacturing East 2008 Conference.
