ImmunoVaccine Technologies Inc. (IVT), a vaccine development company, announced today that it has entered an agreement with Public University Corporation Yokohama City University (YCU) to review a Pseudomonas aeruginosa vaccine, with an exclusive option to license the technology.
This research will formulate YCU’s flagellin-based vaccine candidates with IVT’s DepoVax™ delivery system. The goal is to develop a vaccine that generates a stronger immune response to prevent systemic and local P. aeruginosa infections.
“This vaccine formulation has the potential to generate strong immune responses in immunocompromised individuals susceptible to this pathogen,” said Dr. Marc Mansour, vice president of R&D at IVT.
According to the CDC, Pseudomonas aeruginosa infects immunocompromised patients and accounts for 10% of all hospital-acquired infections. P. aeruginosa infections are often resistant to antibiotics and can be life threatening to people with cancer, cystic fibrosis, severe burns and AIDS.
“There is a vast unmet need for a vaccine that treats individuals infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and we are thrilled to work with YCU,” continued Mansour. “This is a milestone for IVT as it establishes our reach into Asia and strengthens our diversification strategy for DepoVax™.”
The potential value of IVT’s proprietary DepoVax™ vaccine delivery technology continues to gather momentum. In 2008, Pfizer Animal Health licensed the technology for two livestock vaccines. Also, recent partnerships with LIAI, NIH, Defence Research & Development Canada and FIT Biotech, have brought the value of Depovax™ into the limelight.
