ADM Systems Engineering Case Study

ADM Systems Engineering Ltd.ADM Systems Engineering Limited is dedicated to exceeding client expectations by delivering comprehensive data management solutions. Its satisfied clients span several industries across North America and the globe, including Irving Group, Wabush Mines, Zinifex Mines and Arizona Public Service.

ADM services several industries, including food, pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper, manufacturing, mining, power generation and water utilities. Companies in these industries have one thing in common: they operate complex production systems.

These systems have many intricate parts operating in unison. Each unit of the production system depends on the others for optimum performance and output. If one section of the system fails, it goes into unscheduled downtime and production stops. With today’s just-in-time manufacturing practices, unscheduled downtime can be a major crisis costing companies millions of dollars.

Because unscheduled downtime is a significant and costly problem for production system managers, it is important to monitor, report, predict and ultimately prevent it. Traditionally, monitoring and reporting downtime is done manually by filling out detailed log sheets. For already busy managers, manually reporting on these complex systems is not practical and is prone to error.

Using log sheets to report system downtime makes it difficult to monitor and track recurring problems over time. This traditional method of reporting makes it difficult to manage aggregate data, an important step in predicting and preventing unscheduled downtime.

The partners at ADM recognized the shortcomings of manually monitoring and reporting downtime and saw the potential commercial value of designing an automated data management system to make monitoring and reporting downtime easy and reliable. The ADM team envisioned a product that would automatically capture downtime information, enabling system managers to better predict and prevent unscheduled downtime.

The result was ADM’s patented RtDuet™ software. RtDuet, an acronym for “real-time downtime, uptime and event tracking,” allows managers to easily retrieve and analyze data about downtime. The software offers real-time customized reports on overall equipment effectiveness and trends, resulting in better management and prevention of unscheduled downtime.

ADM Systems Engineering later unveiled RtEMIS™, a Real time, Energy Management Information System. Part of the RtDuet™ MES Suite, the module is designed to help industrial and manufacturing facilities manage their energy to reduce cost and increase their bottom line profit.

RtEMIS™ is a software system that calculates real time energy targets based on production and environmental conditions. It then compares them to actual consumption to capture the variance, or difference between what you should be consuming and what you are consuming. Monitoring the variance in each production area of your facility enables the decision making required to drive cost savings and improve profitability.

Since its inception in 2002, ADM has established a strategic partnership with OSIsoft, an industry leader in production information systems. ADM’s RtDuet is marketed as a product add-on to OSIsoft’s existing information systems. The strategic partnership has enabled ADM, developing its software in Halifax, Canada, to reach international markets and better meet customer needs.

ADM’s mission to exceed client expectations by offering innovative technology solutions has been realized. Companies that have adopted its RtDuet software solution have seen measurable results in daily operations. A globally competitive Atlantic Canadian manufacturer, for example, achieved a seven per cent increase in asset utilization, resulting in $7 million in profits and savings. Using ADM’s RtDuet, Wabush Mines improved its equipment availability by an impressive 13 per cent. With results like these, ADM’s list of satisfied customers is steadily growing. The company is quickly gaining a reputation as a software solution provider that saves its customers time and money.

Innovacorp has been alongside ADM since 2002, offering mentoring services on several fronts, including strategic business planning, product pricing and go-to-market strategy development. As the company continues to grow internationally, Innovacorp is confident in ADM’s ability to succeed in the global marketplace.
