Located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Medusa Medical Technologies Inc. develops and markets software for Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers. The company’s technology is an electronic patient care reporting (ePCR) system. Using finger touch-screen technology, the Siren ePCR™ Suite enables paramedics to electronically capture patient information at the scene of an emergency and wirelessly transfer it to clinical and operational staff for in-depth data assessment, management and reporting.
Medusa’s founder Chris McNamara was working with paramedics when he identified an opportunity for a technology that had the potential to dramatically increase the efficiency of emergency health care services. Based on his own experiences and those of other emergency personnel, McNamara discovered a need for an efficient, streamlined technology for capturing and retrieving patient information in an emergency situation. And so Medusa was born.
Established in 1998, Medusa has worked over the last several years to perfect and refine its Siren ePCR™ Suite and today sells to clients like the Emergency Medical Service Authority (EMSA), an emergency medical response agency that serves over one million people in the Tulsa and Oklahoma City areas.
When the company first began, it recognized that user input was critical to developing effective software. Medusa consulted with two of the product’s end users, paramedics and emergency clinicians, to gain the best understanding of user needs. Collaborations led to the development of an easy-to-use, efficient electronic patient data care management system.
Backed by a strong and experienced management team, the Siren ePCR™ Suite was officially launched in 2001 and received rave reviews from EMS industry leaders. A key to the company’s success is its focus on the customer. Medusa is well-known for its commitment to working in close consultation with clients, ensuring the implementation of electronic patient care data management happens as efficiently as possible.
Recognizing the company’s market potential, Innovacorp first invested in Medusa in 2001. In July 2006, Innovacorp made a follow-on investment in Medusa and leveraged additional investments, including funds from Canadian, US, and UK investors leading to a $4 million round of financing. Innovacorp’s investment team also plays an active advisory role in the company, providing high level strategic business advice.
These days Medusa is experiencing significant growth, exporting its products around the world and generating revenues. The company has a strong growth strategy and an innovative technology that is ready and able to capture a share of the growing ePCR market in North America and Europe.
Medusa also has a contract with a global management consulting and technology services company to provide the Siren ePCR™ Suite to 1500 ambulances in the eastern part of England. This project is part of a major contract to provide data management software to the health care system covering approximately 40 per cent of England.
In addition, Medusa has a distribution agreement with Medtronic Inc. focused on the North American market. Medtronic Emergency Response Systems (MERS) is the leader in pre-hospital cardiac management.
Partnerships like these certainly speak to the strength and quality of Medusa’s technology and team. With a solid product, a strong management team and international marketing opportunities, for Medusa, the global marketplace knows no borders.
