Genome Atlantic's goal is to help establish the Atlantic region as a global leader in genomics research.

A genome is the complete set of instructions for making an organism. Genomics is the research aimed at collecting, understanding and decoding the genes and chromosomes of all living organisms. This research allows us to develop new approaches for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human disease. It also has applications in other areas including agriculture, fisheries and aquaculture, forestry and the environment.

Genome Atlantic has several strategies to help it attain its goal. Through its large-scale genomics research projects, DNA sequencing platform and extensive partnerships, Genome Atlantic aims to attract and retain some of the top genomics talent in the world, offering exciting careers for scientists and opportunities for economic development in the region.

The organization is establishing an ideal research-training environment for students and postdoctoral fellows in genomics research, and helping to foster interest in the sector within the region. In addition, Genome Atlantic plans to facilitate the transition of intellectual property from the 'idea' stage through to financially successful ventures.

Genome Atlantic is one of five groups that form Genome Canada, a not-for-profit corporation the federal government formed in February 2000. It supports large-scale genomics projects that draw on existing Atlantic Canadian strengths and expertise in genomics research.
