Innovacorp manages the Nova Scotia First Fund (NSFF). The Fund’s investment strategy targets emerging venture-grade technology companies with high growth potential and attractive risk-return prospects. The fund has capacity to invest in new opportunities, with capital commitments of over $40 million. Key industries include: clean technology, information technology, and life sciences.

The NSFF will consider venture investments that range from $100,000 up to $3 million over the life cycle of the investment. Innovacorp focuses on early stage, fast growing companies that meet the following criteria:

  • Nova Scotia early stage company
  • Business plan credibility, management experience, and entrepreneurial track record
  • Unique proprietary technology (product, system, and/or service), with defendable intellectual property and/or a high barrier to competitive entry
  • Large national/international addressable market
  • Probability of obtaining fully-funded business plan

The overall management objective for the fund is to maximize financial return from investments while delivering Innovacorp's public policy mandate to contribute to economic growth for Nova Scotia and its entrepreneurs. The NSFF's investments have been an important component of the stages of growth continuum of many Nova Scotia companies.

Innovacorp has developed a strong network of venture capital companies to create multi-investor syndicated deals. As Innovacorp's early stage investee companies mature, these relationships with other investors will continue to provide much needed access to larger rounds of investment in the institutional and public capital markets, thus controlling expenses and maximizing financial return. The NSFF's leveraging impact has increased job creation and economic growth for Nova Scotia.

Investment is an integral part of Innovacorp’s High Performance Incubation (HPi)™ business model.

Innovacorp is an active member of the Canadian Venture Capital Association (CVCA).
