Starbucks has 25 million likes. Coca-Cola has eight official Twitter accounts, with over 500K followers between them. How is a local business supposed to compete with companies that have million dollar social media budgets and whole social media departments? If that's what you've been asking yourself, you've been asking the wrong question.
Social media is not about bigger and better numbers, it's about connecting with your customers, and let's be honest, we're not all going to have 25 million customers. Stop comparing your locally owned and operated business to multi-national corporations.
On Thursday, November 24, come to our Business Over Breakfast to learn about great social media practices that are happening right here in Nova Scotia. From charities to coffee shops, many local ventures are making the most of social media. Anita Hovey of Twirp Communications will show you some local social media superstars and give you inspiration you can translate to your own brand.
Anita Hovey, Head Twirp, Twirp Communications (www.twirp.ca) - Anita Hovey has 14 years of experience in communications and fundraising in Nova Scotia’s charitable and non-profit sector. Using her education in public relations from Mount Saint Vincent University, Anita advocated for mental illness supports, arthritis research, and funding for women’s outreach programs. She was progressively navigating her career in fund development when social media first reared its head; she was soon campaigning organizations to adopt it as a new marketing avenue. Before long, Anita discovered her true passion for social communication. In March 2011, Anita opened Twirp Communications, where she is frequently called upon to advise small businesses on the setup, implementation and planning of their first social media presence. While working daily to increase awareness of her current clients, Anita is also pursuing certifications in Google Analytics and HootSuite, and avidly testing new social media tools.
