BioNova – The Nova Scotia Biotechnology & Life Sciences Industry Association named Dr. Barrow the 2007 recipient of its Research Excellence Award, which is presented annually to a member of the research community who has made outstanding contributions to the growth of the life sciences industry in Nova Scotia.

“We created this award to recognize the critical role research plays in growing the life sciences industry, said Marli MacNeil, BioNova’s Chief Executive Officer. “Dr. Barrow is a fine example of the excellence found within the province’s research community and we’re delighted to be recognizing him in this way.”

Dr. Barrow has been with Ocean Nutrition Canada since 2001 and its Vice President of Research and Development since 2004. He leads a team of over 40 scientists and is responsible for the company’s overall research effort. Dr. Barrow holds several patents as a world-leader in oil-encapsulation technology. His innovative and focused leadership at ONC has led to the development of stable micro-encapsulated formulation technologies for omega-3 enriched fatty acids from fish, a development that makes it feasible to incorporate omega-3 enriched fish oils in different foods without producing a “fishy” taste or smell.

Dr. Barrow is also well known for his research on Alzheimer’s disease, having made several key findings and been published extensively in this area. In addition, he has published more than 75 publications in peer review journals, edited two books and developed international research collaborations from ONC in China, Israel, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. He has also graduated seven PhD students and taught and supervised numerous undergraduate students.

Dr. Barrow received the award during a dinner at the World Trade and Convention Centre where Nova Scotia high school students were also recognized for their success in the sanofi-aventis biotech challenge, a life sciences fair that was held on Wednesday at the National Research Council Institute for Marine BioSciences.
