Chaney Enterprises (Chaney), a ready mix concrete company known for its environmental stewardship, has taken the initiative to become even greener. Chaney has joined the growing family of concrete producers across the nation who have partnered with CarbonCure Technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete.
Chaney installed the CarbonCure Technology at its Green-Star Certified Waldorf concrete plant in December 2017. To date, approximately 9,000 cubic yards of concrete made with the CarbonCure Technology have been delivered to jobsites across the Waldorf, Maryland region.
The CarbonCure Technology injects recycled carbon dioxide (CO2) into ready mix concrete during mixing. Once introduced to the mix, the CO2 becomes chemically transformed into a mineral and permanently embedded within the concrete. The process was shown to improve the concrete’s compressive strength, which enabled Chaney to reduce its cement content while maintaining compressive strength requirements.
Chaney has 18 ready mix plants serving Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and DC. Seven of its plants are National Ready Mix Concrete Association Green-Star Certified plants. To achieve national Green-Star certification, the company must demonstrate rigorous actions to reduce environmental impacts. As a result of its sustainability initiatives, Chaney has been recognized with the Alliance Workplace Excellence EcoLeadership Award each year since 2015.
“Chaney is delighted to add CarbonCure to our portfolio of sustainable products,” says Jeff Slagle, Concrete Operations Manager. “The Washington, DC design and construction community is one of the most sustainability-minded groups in the nation. Partnering with CarbonCure allows us to help our customers reduce the carbon footprint of their building developments, while continuing to provide the high-quality concrete and high-calibre service they expect from us.”
Demand for concrete made with the CarbonCure Technology has surged in recent months since CarbonCure was named a finalist in the global Carbon XPRIZE competition and was featured on CNN. Over 1 million cubic yards of concrete made with the CarbonCure Technology have been delivered to construction projects as large as 20-stories across the nation.
CarbonCure is the world leader in CO2 utilization technologies for the cement and concrete sector. Its retrofit technology chemically mineralizes waste carbon dioxide during the concrete manufacturing process to make greener and stronger concrete. The CarbonCure Technology is being used by nearly 100 concrete producers today to reduce concrete’s carbon footprint, create new production cost savings and gain a competitive sales advantage. Concrete plants are retrofitted in a single day and require no CAPEX or changes to their materials and production practices.
