They came. They hacked. They went home with some cash in their pockets (and the promise of more).

Thank you to all the participants, partners and judges in our Smart Energy App Challenge (aka Hackathon) weekend on September 26 and 27, 2015, in Halifax.

Thirty-seven folks came out to use a rich data set from Halifax Solar City to develop an app for the program’s customer base. (Solar City is HRM’s program that finances solar hot water installations for residents.)

Eleven teams were created and 10 teams pitched to judges at the end of day two.

Congrats to the four semi-finalist teams: PayRays, Sol-Ops, HFX_Smart_Solar, and Flux! (Check out a few snaps below of the winners and judges, although we’re missing a picture of team Flux somehow.) The four teams (which each already bagged $500) will work on their apps over the next month and have the opportunity to test and refine them with simulated real-time data at NSCC prior to the demo and awards night in late October (details to come), where they’ll compete for $8,000 in cash!

Much gratitude to our weekend judges: Dawn Umlah (Innovacorp), Ozge Yeloglu (TopLog) and Martin Rovers (Emera).

Huge props to our event collaborators: Shannon Miedema at HRM, Lukas Swan and team at Dalhousie Renewable Energy Storage Lab, Alain Joseph and team at NSCC Applied Research, and Grant Wells at ShiftKey Labs.
