Six Nova Scotia ocean technology companies were selected to participate in Innovacorp’s Demo at Sea Program earlier this fall.

The program let the following companies demonstrate their pre-commercial ocean technologies in a real-life setting (i.e., the sea!).

Xeos Technologies Inc. – Derek Inglis – Dartmouth (
Xeos is developing a navigation device for ocean robotic vehicles that combines an on-board GPS for surface navigation with a strobe flasher to aid in deep water recovery. With a depth rating of 7,500 metres, the technology is suitable for all ocean robots and reduces costs by mitigating the need for two devices.

Turbulent Research Inc. – Chris Loadman – Dartmouth (
Turbulent Research is developing a pipeline inspection gage using intelligent signal processing and embedded sensors in combination with low-power acoustic and magnetic transceivers. The company is also developing a small floating acoustics system for offshore construction monitoring. The products make offshore operations faster, easier and less expensive.

Enginuity Inc. – Ben Garvey, Alastair Trower – Halifax (;
Enginuity has developed a scalable, reusable, high-load mooring connector for the most challenging marine environments. Designed as a long-life connector, SEA-Stab can be used in any dynamic lifting or connection scenario at sea.

Geoforce Group Ltd. – Graham Standen – Dartmouth (
Geoforce Group is developing a deep towed system (DTS®) which is a high-resolution sub-bottom profiling system. Ideal for government, academic research, surveying and offshore projects, the technology gathers information about the structure of the sub-bottom layers of sediment beneath the sea floor. Geoforce’s solution is less expensive than competitors’ and is capable of collecting data in depths from 20 m to 5,000 m water depth. All components, including surface control, power unit, winch, cable and DTS tow body, can be packaged in an easily shipped in a container worldwide.

JASCO Applied Sciences (Canada) Ltd. – Scott Carr, Roberto Racca, David Hannay, John Moloney – Dartmouth (
JASCO is developing a real-time, in situ observational buoy and supporting electronic and software components for the detection, identification and tracking of marine mammals. The technology leverages Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) techniques, powerful in-situ processing and satellite communications to enable industrial, government and academic customers ashore to observe marine mammals in near real-time. JASCO’s product provides timely information of interest to decision-makers and significantly reduces the vessel and personnel costs associated with traditional PAM projects.

Seaforth Geosurveys Inc. – David Lombardi, Garry Casey – Dartmouth (
Seaforth is focusing on enhancement of precise, cost-effective subsea remote sensor positioning. Using a high-accuracy surface-based integrated navigation system (INS) and a next-generation ultra-short baseline (USBL) acoustic tracking system provides precisely geo-referenced data sets for analysis and correlation with other test-bed data such as deep tow geophysical profilers and deployed acoustic sensors. The technologies are ideal for government, academic and commercial customers.
