Robert (Rob) Burns is an investment manager at Innovacorp, where his focus is on identifying attractive seed and early stage investment opportunities in a variety of technology sectors. He manages all aspects of the investment review, approval and closing cycle, and works hands-on with Innovacorp’s portfolio companies to assist them in accelerating their growth, achieving milestones and securing additional financing.
Growing up in New Waterford, Cape Breton, Rob was fascinated by the ocean and decided at an early age he wanted to become a marine biologist. He pursued a B.Sc. in marine biology at Dalhousie, focusing on population dynamics of exploited fish stocks. Upon graduation, he worked in the environmental consulting industry, conducting impact assessments for offshore energy development projects.
Rob soon headed to UNB for a M.Sc. in biology and was then recruited by a prominent life sciences instrumentation company, LI-COR Biosciences, in Lincoln, Nebraska. His role there was technically focused with responsibility for new product R&D and international business development. Through this work, Rob became keenly interested in the business and commercialization of science, which has guided his career path since.
After two years, Rob returned to Nova Scotia and joined Satlantic, a company focused on the design, manufacturing and marketing of oceanographic and water quality instrumentation. Initially he worked in frontline business development and then moved to a more strategic level position.
In his most recent position at Amirix Systems (which you may know as Vemco), Rob managed a team of technical business development professionals delivering novel technologies to the fisheries research market worldwide. As with previous positions, he had the opportunity to travel the world and immerse himself in diverse business cultures.
Rob holds an MBA from Queen’s University.
