Innovacorp is teaming up with local technology companies to hold a career and opportunity fair in downtown Sydney on Thursday, August 3.
"Recruiting and retaining skilled employees is one of the biggest issues facing the technology industry today," said Dan MacDonald, president and CEO of Innovacorp. "The fair will give Cape Breton technology companies visibility with local prospects, and give everyone a chance to meet, network and explore potential opportunities.”
The TecSocial Career and Opportunity Fair will take place at Daniel’s Pub, 456 Charlotte Street, in downtown Sydney, on Thursday, August 3, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Admission is free.
Companies with employment opportunities will be located in booths at the event venue. At the start of the evening, employers will each have five minutes to present their opportunities. After these overviews, prospects can visit each booth for two minutes to make an introduction, drop a business card, and offer a resume. At the end of two minutes, a bell will ring as an indicator to move along to the next booth.
“Our intent is to bring the parties together, not actually perform interviews on site. Think of it as speed-dating for businesses,” said Bob Pelley, Innovacorp’s senior advisor of business ventures and the TecSocial event coordinator.
The fair is open to employers with jobs and outsourcing opportunities in the technology fields to be filled within 90 days. The positions available are varied, ranging from entry level to senior positions, and include: applications developer, educational game designer, database developers (Oracle, SQL), programmers/developers (.Net, UNIX), business unit manager, product manager, IT project manager, experimental physicist, research chemist, product development engineer, manufacturing engineer, mechanical and electrical technologists, and marketing, business development and sales coordinators and managers.
Among the employers participating are: MediaSpark, PAWS - Cape Breton University, AG Research, Advanced Glazings, ProtoCase, Techlink Entertainment, and VMP Group.
“I like the idea of banding with other companies and getting to meet several candidates in a short time, at one location. I think the event will be an effective tool for identifying prospective employees," said Eric Whyte, CEO of AG Research. The advanced software engineering company is headquartered in Sydney and has satellite offices in Halifax, the UK and Bermuda. The company is now expanding its highly skilled technical team in Sydney.
“Even for people who may not be in the technology job market now and won’t be attending the fair, this gathering should still send them a strong message. Businesses are growing in Cape Breton. Technology and innovation are happening here. And there are good and well-paying job opportunities in this region,” said Mr. MacDonald.
The TecSocial Career and Opportunity Fair comes on the heels of Innovacorp’s I-3 technology start-up competition, held in Cape Breton last spring. The competition submissions demonstrated strong entrepreneurial spirit and business ideas in Cape Breton. Innovacorp continues to work one-on-one with these emerging entrepreneurs and other established local companies to assist them in moving their ventures forward.
Hosted by Innovacorp, TecSocial is a meeting for those in the Sydney area with an interest in technology. The meetings are held the first Thursday of every month. Visit WWW.TECSOCIAL.CA for more info.
